How to measure before using Storage Fit Finder
Measure clear usable width between walls, supports, hinges, trim, drawer sides, or other obstructions. Measure depth only as far as the item can sit without preventing a door or drawer from closing. For height, measure to the next surface or the lowest obstruction.
For the item you are considering, use its exterior dimensions. Handles, lid lips, wheels, feet, and tapered sides can matter in any room. Manufacturer dimensions are useful for screening, but very tight fits deserve a second measurement before purchase.
Measuring different storage spaces
- Shelves: measure between uprights or brackets, and measure depth behind any front lip. Clear height runs to the underside of the next shelf.
- Cabinets: measure the door opening as well as the interior. Face frames and hinges often make the opening narrower than the inside, and door-mounted racks take up depth.
- Drawers: measure inside the drawer box, not the drawer front, and check that items clear the counter or drawer above when the drawer slides shut.
- Cubbies: the item has to pass through the opening, so rims, handles, and labels count toward its size.
- Open storage areas: measure the floor or wall area you plan to use, then leave room for walkways, door swings, and reaching the back.
- Under sinks and in RV compartments: pipes, valves, wheel wells, and sloped walls create irregular spaces. Measure at the narrowest point.
How the calculation works
The Fit Finder tests the item's stated width and depth, then rotates the footprint 90 degrees and tests again. For each orientation it calculates whole rows and columns only. If you mark the item stackable, it also calculates how many complete vertical layers fit. Any extra clearance you enter is added to the item's width, depth, and height, so each item keeps that much room in the space.
Maximum capacity favors the arrangement with the largest count. Easiest access favors fewer front-to-back rows when possible. Balanced mode considers capacity first, then accessibility when layouts hold the same number. The calculation uses only the measurements you provide and does not rank products or brands.
The room and storage-space choices change only the guidance shown with the result, not the calculation. Switching between inches and centimeters converts the numbers already entered. The result is a dimensional check only: it does not confirm weight capacity, structural safety, or whether an item suits a particular space in practice.
